When I Grow Up! Written, Produced and Performed by Shawn Collier.

So transitioning from a song I wrote two years ago to a song I wrote just yesterday! Songs often start life in completely different guises in the weirdest of the situations. Some work out and some, ultimately, don’t. It’s inevitable some things just don’t sound good and you end up dumping them thinking ‘there’s something better out there I just know it’. Truth be told, I probably have about thirty odd tracks in my iTunes library that started life as instrumentals and just never happened for one reason or another. I have some with lyrics that just didn’t sit right when I tried to sing along and others that I eventually persevered with and triumphed in the end.

The best outcome is exactly what happened yesterday, this song came to me in the car on the way back from work and I when I got home it was all I wanted to do. I suffered initially as I’ve never written a song on my new MacBook and so it was like re-establishing my workflow and it all seemed a little jarring and suffocating at first. Four chords and a pitch shift later and ‘When I Grow Up!’ came to life piece by piece. I was recording vocals and writing the lyrics as I went along and this was the end result.  For lyrics, read on.

When I Grow Up!

What kind of words have you been writing on the table? what sort of trophies have you won in ignorance?

Yeah he makes up the football team, and he’s won in admiration.
But he’s the guy with two fathers and no-one seems to mind.

That you’ve crushed, nurtured the difference.
You told him he was weird.

When I grow up I wanna be
(Free, free, free)
When I grow up I wanna be
(Free, free, free)

But when he holds the helmet,
he’s a winner to you and me.

When I grow up I wanna be
(Free, free, free)
When I grow up I wanna be
(Free, free, free)

Born to fly,
Touch the sky.
Born to dream about a world.
Brand new eyes, a glittering day
Where they don’t give a damn about us.
When I grow up I wanna be free, I wanna be me for every day.
I wanna love you, I wanna love me, wanna be free for every day.

What kind of truth does disregarding us enable?
what kind of politics would serve them all so wrong?

Every single one of us deserves the life they dream of,
so why’d we point the finger when the day’s not yet been dawn.

You can hate and pull me through it
But I cannot change the one I love.

When I grow up I wanna be
(Free, free, free)
When I grow up I wanna be
(Free, free, free)

You can say it’s never been heard of
But to me it comes so naturally.

When I grow up I wanna be
(Free, free, free)
When I grow up I wanna be
(Free, free, free)

Born to fly,
Touch the sky.
Born to dream about a world.
Brand new eyes, a glittering day
Where they don’t give a damn about us.
When I grow up I wanna be free, I wanna be me for every day.
I wanna love you, I wanna love me, wanna be free for every day.
